Beaches on Nantucket Sound

Nantucket Island is a tiny jewel in the Atlantic, just 30 miles south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Normally a sleepy little community of only 10,000 year-round residents, the population surges during busy season to a whopping 50,000 -- virtually bursting at the seams for this tiny island. A summer colony and tourist destination, Nantucket has some of the most beautiful beaches and sought-after surf on the Eastern seaboard, with an idyllic, picture-postcard setting. From the cobblestone streets to the boardwalk, the island is a haven for generations of residents and returning tourists looking for a relaxing seaside getaway.

Jetties Beach - North Shore

  • Jetties Beach is a busy stretch of shoreline that draws most crowds. Families with kids like it because of the many amenities it offers: changing rooms, a playground, nearby food concession and restaurant, plus calm, shallow waters that are ideal for toddlers. The Boston Pops play an annual concert here every summer, and the boardwalk is a busy thoroughfare with easy access to the parking lot.

Cisco Beach - South Shore

  • This beach is more suited to the serious surfers on Nantucket, particularly after a big storm stirs up the waves. The nearby Nantucket Surf School holds private and group lessons, as well as rents surfboards and other equipment to enthusiasts. The ocean current at Cisco has an extremely strong riptide, so it's not recommended for children or families. This beach offers no public parking, facilities, or lifeguards.

Great Point - East Shore

  • A secluded spot away from the crowds, Great Point is worth the four-wheel drive excursion required to reach its shoreline. This 7-mile stretch of beach boasts a working lighthouse at the far end and is frequented often by local fishermen. Great Point is also part of the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge, which offers tours and education about the local ecosystem and wildlife. A beach permit is required, and there are no facilities or lifeguard.

Madaket Beach - West Shore

  • Madaket has some of the strongest surf on the island, and provides another great place to avoid the crowds, and seek some quiet space for a picnic lunch or a spectacular sunset. This very large beach offers seasonal bus services, plus restroom facilities and a lifeguard, and is accessible via a 5-mile bike path. Food is also available from a nearby restaurant.
