Compare Plane & Ship Travel

Part of the excitement of travel is finding new ways to do it; or, perhaps, old ways. International flights have never been more numerous, or easier to take. But for travelers looking to enjoy getting there as much as being there, travel by ship is an exciting alternative.

Europe

• Europe has at least 40 low-cost air carriers, making air travel between cities cheap and time-efficient. But consider instead the adventure of going from London to St. Petersburg or from Italy to Turkey on small cruise liners.

Asia

• Flights around Asia can be exceptionally cheap, but the ship routes through port cities in the continent's southeast allow you to explore the regions' history firsthand. Travel from Singapore to Indonesia or Malaysia, or consider a two-week cruise from Bangkok to Hanoi.

Australia

• Adventurer Charlie Boorman proved that crossing from Indonesia to northern Australia can be literally sickening in "By Any Means," but he also showed the excitement involved. Some freighters traveling between Indonesia and Australia offer passage for tourists, but space on board is usually negotiated personally. Contact local ship's captains and try to arrange passage.

Dinner Cruises in St. Johns, Florida

The St. John's River is Florida's largest, spanning over 300 miles and bordering 12 counties. The river is important commercially and is used for recreational purposes with a number of cruises operating along it. One of the reasons for this is the impressive scenery that surrounds it, allowing passengers the opportunity to enjoy the local wildlife and flora.

Rivership Romance

• Rivership Romance cruises carry passengers along the St. John's river, while providing dinner and dancing. Food is either a buffet or a full meal complete with salad, rolls and butter, a main course that can consist of tilapia, mango pork tenderloin, vegetable gratin or chicken with a blood orange glaze among others, followed by dessert. All meals are prepared freshly on board by the chef. During the cruise, passengers will travel past nine lakes and will have the opportunity to see numerous birds, reptiles and even manatees. They can cater to wedding receptions, bar mitzvahs and other celebrations. Jacksonville River Cruises can also assist with activities before and after the cruise, such as city tours and limo hire.

Spirit of Hospitality

• Spirit of Hospitality operates two luxury vessels that sail down the St. John's River. Wedding receptions, corporate events, anniversaries and other celebrations can be catered. A buffet complete with carving station is available for dinner; alternatively passengers may choose to have a sit-down meal, with a mostly American-inspired menu including wings, meatballs, prime rib of beef and pork loin.
