Motels on Route 66 in Williams, Arizona

The flashing neon lights signaling a "motor hotel" were a welcome relief to the automobile traveler driving along Route 66 in its heyday in the 1950s. While some towns and motels along the famous route are frequented only by the whistling wind, the Arizona city of Williams thrives and many of its original motels sport modern amenities to welcome today's traveler.

In the Forest

  • Built in the 1940s, Canyon Motel and RV park tucks into the tall ponderosa pines at the east end of town. Constructed from flagstone rock, three motel rooms are grouped together in each free-standing cottage. The fully modernized rooms have one king or one double bed as well as a pullout sofa. Railroad enthusiasts can enjoy a night in an authentic train car or caboose that sleeps up to six people. The facility has a campsite as well as an indoor pool, horseshoe pit, laundry and playground.

On the Western Edge

  • Built in 1950 but fully restored in 2011, the Highlander Motel still sports its original neon sign. The motel's 11 rooms brim with Southwestern flair and have two double beds or one queen bed. Each room comes with a refrigerator, microwave and coffeemaker for enjoying an in-room snack. Kick back and relax in your room with cable TV and Wi-Fi or walk to restaurants and shops in the city's historic downtown just outside your door.

Pets weighing 30 pounds or less are permitted pending a per-night, per-pet cleaning fee. Americas Best Value Inn allows kids 11 and under to stay free of charge in a parent’s room. Grab everything from snacks to toiletries in the lobby’s 24-hour convenience store and enjoy cooked-to-order breakfasts at the hotel’s on-site grill.

Motels Near the Tijuana Border

Head down Mexico way and experience the culture and cuisine of Tijuana, on the Baja California Peninsula, a bustling and buzzing border town filled with American travelers. Tourists flock to Avenida Revolucion, the city’s massive main thoroughfare lined with street vendors selling handmade arts and crafts, taco carts wafting a hodgepodge of smells through the air and lively bars showcasing cheap drink specials and full dance floors. As of January 2014, the U.S. Department of State warned tourists to exercise caution when traveling throughout Baja, particularly at night, due to high crime rates. Stay close to the action, while also at a safe distance, by booking a motel in a San Diego suburb near the border.

Border Town

  • Stay in the town that borders Tijuana directly – San Ysidro, California. Knights Inn San Ysidro is a budget-friendly motel that serves complimentary hot beverages in the morning and where kids 17 and under stay free. The motel also has an outdoor swimming pool and is within walking distance of a 24-hour restaurant. Travelodge San Ysidro serves free continental breakfast each morning.   • Find a room in the beach city of Imperial Beach, just 10 minutes from the border.
