Beach

  • For vacationers looking to relax on a beach, the island of Key West in southern Florida is lined with them. "Go Florida" says that Key West holds celebrations year long, and tolerance of alternative lifestyles is widespread. Fishing tournaments, art festivals, literary seminars, plays, international power boat races and yachting regattas are held here regularly. The surrounding reefs provide a haven for ocean fish, giving anglers and snorkelers endless opportunities.

  • In addition to coastal fishing, Florida offers 3 million acres of fresh water and 12,000 miles of river, according to "Go Florida." Destin, Florida, in the panhandle, is self-titled "the world's luckiest fishing village" and is a haven for fishing charters. You don't need a boat to fish in Destin; the pier and jetty offer anglers regular catches of pompano, whiting, channel bass, sheepshead, blue runner, bluefish, sail cat, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, cobia, bonito and jack crevalle. For largemouth bass, try Florida's largest freshwater lake, Okeechobee. The Pier II Resort offers guests an "unforgettable bass fishing experience," according to their website.

Snorkeling

  • The Florida Keys provide clear waters and reefs for snorkelers to explore. Seventeen hundred islands off Florida's southern coast have more snorkeling outfitters per square foot than any other place in the world, according to "Snorkeling Info." John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park on Key Largo features 47 different coral varieties and hundreds of fish species. The park regularly offers 2 1/2-hour snorkeling tours to visitors of all ages. Islamorada, Florida features the Chesapeake Beach Resort, known for their spacious rooms and guest villas.
