Providence, Rhode Island, long has been distinguished for its culinary scene. Countless examples abound, from Federal Hill's Italian bistros and the world-famous culinary institute at Johnson & Wales to fresh-caught seafood shipped direct from Narragansett Bay. It's curious, then, why waterfront dining in the Ocean State's capital is so limited. However, those hankering for views of the Providence River while noshing on their petite greens and cod do have a modest selection of restaurants from which to choose.
Cafe Nuovo
- Cafe Nuovo is located at One Citizens Plaza in the heart of downtown, nestled between the confluence of the Moshassuck and Woonasquatucket Rivers. The cuisine fuses subtle hints of American, Asian, Island and European flavors, with each successive course meant to build on the previous one. Seasonal favorites range from Denver lamb chops and Hawaiian sea bass to Venezuelan chocolate and Epiros feta. An extensive wine list boasts high-end choices from several lesser-known U.S. and Australian vineyards, while blueberry cheesecake and key lime semifreddo top a lineup of gourmet desserts. Dress code is business casual, and reservations are recommended.
The Whiskey Republic
- The Whiskey Republic, located at Corliss Landing on South Water Street, is equal parts Irish pub and Hard Rock Cafe. When local bands aren't shredding on stage, sporting events are playing across the restaurant's 20 wall-mounted HDTVs. Thick Black Angus patties are served with hand-cut fries, and toppings include Irish cheddar, jalapenos, pulled pork and fried egg. In May 2012, "Travel + Leisure" awarded it the "Best Burgers in Providence." Even more notable is a large whiskey menu featuring top-shelf brands, including Johnnie Walker Blue and Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve, both of which run more than $35 per glass. This liquor selection makes the restaurant extremely popular for private parties and corporate events.
Waterman Grille
- The Waterman Grille overlooks the Seekonk River on the East Side of Providence, with two floors of casual waterfront dining – indoor on the first and outdoor on the second. Entrees are served a la carte, allowing patrons to customize pairings of premium meats with organic, locally grown produce sourced from prominent New England farms. Signature plates are seasonal and frequently updated, while true mainstays include pork tenderloin and filet mignon wood-fire grilled over maple, cherry and oak. An expansive vegetarian and gluten-free menu is available upon request. Plus, starving students at Brown and RISD get 20 percent off their meals Sunday through Thursday.
The Wharf Tavern
- The Wharf Tavern is situated along the Warren River about 20 minutes from downtown Providence. Established in 1955, this oyster distributor-turned-eatery features water views from nearly every table, and adjacent slips that allow boaters to dock for a quick bite. A seafood-heavy menu sports the usual suspects such as scallops, scrod, salmon and Atlantic-caught swordfish alongside more unique fare including flatbread pizza topped with shrimp, crab and lobster. Plenty of prime rib and poultry options exist for those who prefer feet over fins. A family friendly brunch is held every Sunday, and banquet rooms with a combined 150-person capacity may be rented for events.
