Things to Do in Point Lookout, NY


Point Lookout, New York, is a small hamlet on Long Beach Barrier Island, off the southern coast of Long Island. Inside the Town of Hempstead, it consists of about 11 blocks, where you’ll find small stores, local cafes and lodging. Water sports, such as kayaking, sailing and jet skiing are popular in this area. Most activities are close to but not directly in Point Lookout, including a myriad of diversions in New York City, which is about 40 miles away.

A Day of Fishing

  • Fishing is a popular activity in Point Lookout and the local catch includes fluke, blackfish, striped bass and tuna. Rent a boat at one of the businesses along Bayside Drive and navigate the water yourself. Anglers have the options of bringing their own rods and reels, renting tackle for the day or purchasing new gear. Fishing charter companies are also at the ready to take you on a guided trip. Food is available at some marinas and fishing stations.

Play a Round of Golf

  • The Lido Golf Club in Lido Beach is a seaside public golf course about 2 1/2 miles from Point Lookout. Players on this course will encounter significant water hazards, elevated greens flanked by huge bunkers and a string of difficult finishing holes. Play all 18 holes or reserve an early-bird, midday or twilight tee time for 9-hole play. The Lido Golf Club has a pro shop and offers private lessons and golf clinics to improve your game.
  • Embark on a Hempstead Bay seal cruise about 8 miles away, in Freeport. This nautical tour gives you the opportunity to get out on the water and close to animals you typically see in captivity. From winter into spring, watch adult harbor seals and their pups interact with each other in their natural habitat. During the boat ride, gaze at the scenery and listen to a naturalist explain seals' behavior.

Family Activities at the Beach

  • A variety of family activities awaits about 6 miles from Point Lookout at Jones Beach State Park. The park hosts 6 to 8 million visitors each year, spans over 2,400 acres and boasts more than 6 miles of white-sand beaches. Saunter the boardwalk, dip into the ocean or surf the waves. Play with family and friends at the miniature golf, basketball and shuffleboard facilities, go cycling or frolic on the playground.
