Tent Camping in Isabella County, Michigan


Classic northern woodlands and the gently flowing Chippewa River draw a scenic backdrop for tenting experiences in Isabella County. Tent campers can look for the camping season to begin around April, when average daily highs reach a pleasant 68 degrees Fahrenheit and blue violets and trillium wildflowers emerge from forest floors. Remote Camping at Deerfield Park

  • Located about 6 miles west of Mt. Pleasant, the county-operated Deerfield Nature Park is a quick escape from central Michigan urban life. The 591-acre park has 10 remote tent campsites nestled along the Chippewa River. The only access to these rustic sites is by hiking or paddling. Campground amenities are basic, with only hand-pumped water and campfire rings offered. But recreation facilities at the year-round park are aplenty and include 8 miles of hiking and biking trails, groomed cross-country trails, volleyball, horseshoe, disc golf and a boat landing. Lakeside Family Camping

  • For a family tenting experience, Coldwater Lake Family Park in Weidman is a prime pick. The county-owned park spans 28 acres along the shores of Coldwater Lake. All 100 campsites provide for tent and RV camping. Modern restrooms and showers offer comfort. The park's sandy swimming beach is used by sunbathers and swimmers. A boat launch connects campers to recreation on the 294-acre lake. Games of volleyball, horseshoes and basketball provide friendly competition, and an Old West-themed playground keeps youngsters busy. The park welcomes campers from the first blush of spring in May through mid October.

Resort-Style Tenting

  • The privately owned Gammy Woods Family Campground in Weidman offers a resort-like environment packed with recreation options and amusements. Gammy Woods has 83 campsites welcoming rustic tent campers and RV campers. Modern restrooms, picnic tables and fire rings add comfort to the outdoor experience. It's a socially oriented campground, with holiday celebrations, potluck dinners and musical entertainment. Swim at the groomed sandy beach beside a pond enhanced by a waterfall. Youngsters can climb and slide at the playground, and basketball, volleyball and horseshoes can be played. When foul weather strikes, a game room with a pool table and video arcade keeps the good times rolling. Gammy Woods starts the camping season in May and remains open through November.

Camping for Fairgoers

  • Isabella County Fairgrounds in Mt. Pleasant provides tent and RV camping between April 1 and October 15. When it's fair time, the 73 grass sites fill with fairgoers and participants. Fairground spaces place campers at the heart of the annual Isabella County Youth & Farm Fair, a traditional agriculture event with a carnival, animal exhibits and grandstand shows. It's the only time of year campsite reservations are required here. Flea market fans can catch bargains at a weekly market held every Wednesday from May through October.
