Sights to See in Bangladesh

Bangladesh might not have the international mystique of its neighbors like Nepal and India, but its unique geography and culture make it well worth a visit. In Bangladesh, you can find beaches, mangroves, mosques and a fascinating culture. It's off the beaten path of South India travel, but for the adventurous traveler, spotting Bengal tigers in mangrove forests and sampling curries on the streets of Dhaka are adventures not to be missed.

Explore the Mangrove Forests

  • Sundarbans National Park is the world’s largest mangrove forest. It stretches about 50 miles from the shoreline and is home to an incredible range of flora and fauna. The forest can be explored on an endless network of rivers and swamps, but be cautious. With more than 400 Bengal tigers roaming the area and crocodiles lurking behind reeds, there’s a tangible air of danger while floating through the forests. The best way to appreciate the mangrove forest is through a three- or four-day tour. Guide Tours and Bengal Tours are highly rated tour organizations, as well as reputable in their conservation efforts.

Enjoy the Tea Estates

  • The small, atmospheric town of Srimangal is home to a fascinating tea culture. The verdant fields of Zareen and Finlays are two popular tea-growing estates in the area. The estates don't run formal tours, and many people just bike or walk into the fields from the roads. However, if asked, the managers of the tea estates may provide a free tour to eager visitors. Later, make sure you drink some famous tea at the Nilkantha Tea Cabin in Srimangal to get the full tea culture experience.
  • Slow paddle-wheel boats called rockets run daily between Dhaka and other major tourist sites around Bangladesh. Rockets are a great way to get around, and are also tourist destination in and of themselves. First-class passengers can take advantage of the deck at the front of the boat as well as relatively nice cabins. Second-class cabins are less fancy, but passengers can dine in first class for an extra fee. Keep an eye out for river dolphins and traditional boats. Although the safety records of these boats used to be questionable, new safety regulations have improved them.

Immerse Yourself in Chaotic Dhaka

  • Dhaka is the largest city in Bangladesh, as charming as it is overwhelming. With rich and poor calling it home, Dhaka is the place to experience all of Bangladesh’s contrasts and energy. The National Museum, which encompasses the natural and human history of Bangladesh, is a highlight of any visit to Dhaka, while the Liberation War Museum tastefully remembers the area's brutal war for independence. Dhaka is also the perfect place to sample Bangladeshi cuisine, renowned for its flavor and texture. Bangladeshi cuisine is similar to Indian food, with kebabs and curries figuring prominently into dishes. In Dhaka, Dhaka Roti House is the place to go for kebabs, while Woondaal has great curry.
