Beaches in Bali

Visitors to Bali discover that there are countless beaches around the island. From the crowded and family-friendly to the remote and wild, Bali offers beaches to suit a variety of tastes. Because of Bali's volcanic origins, some of the beaches are composed of black sand, in contrast to the standard white sand beaches.

Kuta

  • As the central tourist hub of the island, Kuta beach is understandably busy. The beach is sandy, and the waves are fun but easy to handle. The main selling point of the beach is its accessibility. The biggest drawback here are the countless vendors who approach beach-goers. This is not the place to go if you want peace and quiet; for a fast, fun splash in the water, however, it is perfect.

Jimbaran

  • Jimbaran beach is quieter than Kuta but offers similar tropical beach appeal. Many visitors experience Jimbaran beach while eating dinner at one of the many seafood restaurants. Tables are set up on the sand with a perfect view of the setting sun.

Uluwatu

  • Uluwatu is home to one of Bali's most famous temples. It is also a major destination for surfers visiting the island because of a great surf break. Uluwatu is recommended for experienced surfers only. Visitors to the temple can appreciate the amazing view of the beach from the cliff.

Sanur

  • At one time Sanur was Bali's most popular beach. Although it suffers from erosion, Sanur beach is still attractive. A large coral reef protects the area, so the waves are gentle. The reef may be explored with snorkeling equipment rented from beach vendors. Although much of the reef is dead, snorkelers can find fish and other animal life amid the coral.

Dreamland

  • Dreamland beach on the Bukit Peninsula offers beach goers a more remote experience. There are some vendors on the beach, but they are not as forceful as those in the main tourist drags. The beach is sandy, and the waves are usually not high enough to be dangerous.

Legian

  • One of Bali's most popular tourist beaches, Legian offers a wide variety of water sports activities. Shaded by palm trees, this family-friendly beach can be quite crowded. Arriving early in the day is the key to claiming one the coveted spots under the shade of the palm trees.

Lovina

  • Visitors to the north coast of Bali discover the black sand beach of Lovina. This is a long, quiet beach with almost no surf. The water here is warmer than the water around other parts of the island.
