Universal Studio Tours in California

The studio tour at Universal Studios Hollywood is the can't-miss attraction of the bunch: a ride through sets that have seen the filming of some of the most iconic scenes in Tinseltown history. Pay extra and you can get a more in-depth look at the Universal backlot, or, with your standard admission, simply enjoy the many other attractions of the theme park.

Tour Overview

  • The studio tour is the most comprehensive of the attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood, taking you on a 45-minute tram ride through a working movie studio and letting you experience thrills along the way. You'll visit a city scene used in the filming of numerous movies and TV shows, the Bates Motel from "Psycho," the plane crash set from "War of the Worlds" and Wisteria Lane from ABC's "Desperate Housewives." Expect to encounter an animatronic Jaws as you ride beside a lake, and prepare to dodge attacks from King Kong as you pass through one dark building.

Exclusive Backlot Access

  • Expand your studio tour experience with the exclusive backlot access provided by VIP Experience tickets. Transported by a special trolley, you'll see areas not available to the general public, including the actual soundstages where Hollywood productions are being filmed. You'll get to explore Universal's prop warehouse and sound department. The tickets, which cost about three to four times standard park admission tickets, also include knowledgeable VIP guide escorts, front-of-line access on all attractions, gourmet meals and valet parking.

Safety and Handicapped Information

  • Because the studio tour includes loud sounds, explosions with flame effects and side-to-side rocking of your vehicle in certain spots, the experience may be too intense for small children. Guests who use oxygen tanks cannot take them on the ride and must leave them at the closest first aid station. Medium and large service animals can board with their masters as the tram has adequate floor space for them. Guests in wheelchairs can ride if members of their parties can assist them in moving from wheelchair to tram seat. Employees are not allowed to assist.

Other Park Attractions

  • Universal Studios Hollywood is filled with a number of other attractions, including Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride, which whisks you forward and backward through ancient catacombs, and Shrek 4-D, a short film featuring the lovable ogre with 3-D effects. On Jurassic Park: The Ride, you'll explore the dinosaur-filled island before escaping an encounter with a t-rex by plunging 84 feet down a waterfall. Watch stuntmen perform death-defying feats onstage in a show inspired by the post-apocalyptic film "WaterWorld." Splash around on a water-filled playground at The Adventures of Curious George and join Homer, Bart, Marge, Lisa and Maggie in Krustyland in The Simpsons Ride.
